Got Sauced: Over 41,000 Visit Downtown for Championship BBQ
Despite lingering rain showers, unusually cool temperatures, and a tornado warning, the 2011 Rock ‘n Rib Festival presented by Rib Crib BBQ & Grill welcomed 41,024 visitors to Downtown Tulsa for championship barbecue from seven award-winning “pitmasters” from across the nation. The four-day festival also featured live music from 17 bands, delicious concessions, Oklahoma wineries, free mechanical bull rides, the Jack Daniels Saloon, and the new Curtis Culinray Stage.
Cowboy’s BBQ of Fort Worth, TX was awarded their second consecutive Urban Tulsa “Best of Show” Award at the festival. Led by “pitmasters” Enrique Vega and Dallas Green, Cowboy’s has been taking their award-winning barbeque to festivals across the country for over 30 years. Their secret lies in their preparation. Every single piece of meat is patted to perfection with a unique “Rio Grande” rub, slow-cooked over a mesquite wood fire, then finally doused in a generous glaze of one of their signature sauces. Cowboy’s adds this award to their collection of over 200 trophies. Their rib recipe was chosen as the best by a panel of 13 judges comprised of representatives from the local media and festival sponsors.
The Rock ‘n Rib Festival is Tulsa’s largest celebration of barbecue and features professional rib “pitmasters” cooking under a massive wall of banners and huge tents on Third Street and Frisco Avenue. BBQ styles range from Southwestern and Memphis, to St. Louis and Texas. Vendors offer extensive menus featuring barbeque ribs, shrimp, beef, chicken, cornbread, beans, coleslaw, and an array of signature sauces.
